I haven’t met a person that doesn’t like pizza. There are so many different styles, varieties, toppings, and flavor profiles that there is one for just about any palette. This is a very non-traditional pizza that I have fallen in love with! The zippy sauce, sweet onions, and fresh strawberries are so refreshing!
I saw a pizza on Pinterest about two years ago that inspired the sauce and the fresh strawberry and cilantro topping. I made some modifications and came up with this lovely recipe.
Sweet & Spicy Strawberry Pizza Recipe yields 8 traditional slices
inspired by the recipe of Cafe Sucre Farine
1 ball pizza dough store bought or your favorite recipe {I’ll be posting my gluten-free herb pizza dough recipe later this week}
1/2C organic strawberry preserves
1/4C balsamic vinegar
2t sriracha sauce
1C shredded mozzarella cheese
1C fresh baby spinach
1C fresh strawberries
1/2 sweet onion
1/4C raw almonds
2T fresh cilantro
Preheat the oven to 375. Put the balsamic vinegar on medium-high heat and bring to a rapid boil.
The steam played tricks with my camera but I got this much for ya! Add in the strawberry preserves and sriracha to the vinegar mix and stir well. Set aside to cool sauce slightly.
On a pizza stone or baking sheet sprayed with oil, spread your dough to desired shape. Depending on what dough you use, you may need to pre-bake it a bit. Since the dough I used was gluten-free, it was easiest to smooth and shape it with water on my hands. The extra liquid means I needed to pre-bake my crust for about 5 minutes to keep it from being mushy.
I knew my dough wouldn’t spread too much so I tried to make it pretty round with smooth edges. While it baked I roughly chopped the onion, spinach, and ran the almonds through my small food processor.
Once the dough was pre-baked, I spread the sauce, spinach, and onions on top…
followed by the mozzarella and almonds.
I baked the pizza at 375 for 18 minutes, meanwhile, chopping the strawberries and cilantro.
You know the pizza is ready when the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Sprinkle the strawberries and cilantro atop the pizza and serve while hot. This is truly a unique pizza with the sweet and spicy balsamic sauce and the light refreshing berries and herbs.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
